Nothing to do with the book at all

Billy Bragg, god bless him and keep him. When there’s nothing on the radio, and you just want some music to take you home, Billy will do it every time.

“One minute she says
She’s gone to get the cat in
The next thing I know
She’s mumbling in Latin.”

From “She’s Got a New Spell”, from his glorious 1988 album ‘Workers Playtime’. Genius. I saw him for the first time in late ’83, at Manchester Poly, which I believe was his third ever pro gig. He got lost many times through the songs, but just laughed it off, remembered the chords, and carried on. I’d never seen that before, and it was actually more refreshing than the Pistols ever were. Obviously I am on his side politically, but that’s not the point. I will always be on his side, for his music, and for the memories it brings.

  1. I’ll never forget the first day I met her
That September morning was clear and fresh
The way she spoke and laughed at my jokes
And the way she rubbed herself
Against the edge of my desk
She became a magic mystery to me
And we’d sit together in double
    History twice a week…

From the Saturday boy. Billys love songs are raw and innocent and have always got to me…

…and you can push the Hoover round if you want to make a start. ‘Valentine’s Day’
